Fallen Angel or Institutional Trap? Decoding Transocean ($RIG) via Volume Price Analysis
If you have read my book, The Complete Guide to Volume Price Analysis, you know that retail investors love bargain (aka ‘cheap’) stocks. When an asset falls from a split-adjusted high of $128 down into the $1 – $2 range, the public sees an asymmetric bargain.
But cheap does not automatically mean value. To see whether a fallen angel is truly ready to rise again, we must apply our core VPA methodology to higher timeframes and cross-reference the chart with institutional off-exchange transaction footprints.
Today, we are putting Transocean ($RIG) under the microscope to see exactly what the insiders and mega-funds are doing with this offshore drilling titan.
The Historical Macro View: Why $RIG Collapsed
Looking at the multi-decade monthly and 3-month charts (above), the decline is stark. The first major down-leg began with the 2008 Great Financial Crisis, which coincided with the bursting of the crude oil bubble. But the reason $RIG fundamentally disintegrated between 2013 and 2016—breaking cleanly below the critical $30 floor—was a combination of devastating legal liabilities and a brutal structural shift in the energy sector.
Following the 2010 Deepwater Horizon disaster, Transocean faced years of crushing litigation, culminating in a $1.4 billion Department of Justice settlement in 2013 that severely drained its cash reserves. Just as the company was staggering out of the courtroom, the 2014 oil crash hit. Saudi Arabia and OPEC flooded the global market with crude, crashing oil from $115 down to under $30.
During the previous boom, offshore drillers had taken on billions in toxic debt to build state-of-the-art ultra-deepwater fleets. When oil crashed, major oil companies slashed exploration budgets. Transocean was left holding massive amounts of idle, expensive hardware. The multi-year bear market finally bottomed out during the 2020 pandemic when negative crude prices pushed the stock down to an all-time low of just $0.65.
The VPA Reality: Massive Phase B Absorption
But look at what has happened since that 2020 wash-out. On the monthly and weekly charts, $RIG has been locked in an extensive, flat horizontal baseline since 2017/2018.
More importantly, look at the volume. The volume profiles building across the base of the current monthly chart are historic. We are seeing big volume bars on very tight, compressed price spreads.
In VPA terms, this is a textbook Effort vs. Result anomaly. If this volume represented genuine, dominant selling pressure, the stock would have gone to zero years ago. The fact that the price spread is holding a tight floor between Direct Support ($4.50 – $5) on big volume proves Demand Absorption. Insiders and mega-funds are systematically utilising off-exchange liquidity to accumulate millions of shares without triggering a visible upward spike.
Live Case Study: The November 5th Anomaly
To see how this institutional absorption operates in real-time, we only have to look at the daily tape from the November 5th trading session.
Following its recent earnings report, $RIG was aggressively pushed down by short-sellers, closing the day -6.51% lower at $5.10. On the daily chart, the session printed a hefty 66.5 million share volume bar on a price range and spread very similar to the previous downward sessions.
To the retail eye, a red downcandle on 66.5 million shares looks like pure weakness. But to a trained VPA trader, the tape reveals a clear Effort vs. Result anomaly.
If selling pressure were genuinely dominant and unopposed, this 66.5 million share push would have completely shattered the floor and sent the stock cascading into a wide-spread waterfall candle. Instead, the price spread tightly compressed and halted right at the critical $5.10 structural support line. This confirms that the downward momentum ran headfirst into a passive wall of institutional buying.
Cross-referencing this daily chart anomaly with institutional off-exchange transaction logs reveals the exact footprints of the buyers:
- The Mid-Day Layers: Throughout the afternoon, large institutional blocks systematically stepped in to absorb supply at rigid, fixed decimal lines—first layering dense clusters of trades at $5.45, and then establishing a secondary defense line at $5.20.
- The Closing Bell Anchor: The definitive proof of demand absorption landed right at the 4:00 PM market close. A single, block trade of 3.9 million shares (worth almost $20 million) crossed the tape at exactly $5.10.
That single trade accounted for nearly 6% of the entire day’s volume, executing at a single tick. Large institutions deliberately allowed retail panic and short-sellers to push the asset down into their waiting hands, capturing millions of shares off-exchange without triggering a public price spike.
The Options Matrix & The 33% Short Squeeze Nitro
Cross-referencing this structural VPA base with the latest options data stack reveals that a massive mechanical trap has been set, with market-maker positioning shifting to create a highly explosive coil:
- The Gamma Environment and the Flip Line: $RIG is currently trading at $5.24 at time of writing around which places it structurally below the Gamma Flip level of $5.90.
- The Mechanics: Because the stock is trading in a Negative Gamma regime, options market makers are structurally forced to sell as the price drops and buy as it rises. This creates intraday volatility and sudden, sharp moves.
- The Guardrails: However, this volatility is trapped between two institutional walls. The near-term options Put Wall sits firmly at $5.00, acting as a mechanical floor where dealers must buy to hedge their positions. Overhead, the Call Wall sits at $7.00, serving as the target ceiling.
- The Short Float Fuel: This is where any trade becomes highly asymmetric. $RIG carries a short interest of almost 31% of its entire public float, with short-sellers requiring seven days to Cover
Because the stock is trading in Negative Gamma below the $5.90 Flip line, any progressive buying that pushes the stock up toward $5.50 and $5.60 will trigger a chain reaction. As the price climbs toward the $5.90 Gamma Flip point, market makers will be mechanically forced to flip from selling to aggressively buying underlying shares to re-hedge their books.
When you combine institutional buying with a 31% short float scrambling to cover their positions simultaneously, the move past $5.90 has the potential to trigger a massive, rapid short squeeze straight up toward the $7.00 Call Wall.
The Fundamental Turn and the Valaris Catalyst
Unlike the speculative environment of 2014, the underlying fundamentals have completely transformed. Transocean reported Q3 earnings on November 2nd, swinging to a positive net income of $26 million, confirming that premium day rates have stabilised.
Furthermore, the company has received full regulatory approval for its merger with Valaris ($VAL), set to close on December 1, 2026. This merger secures an $8 billion backlog, locking in contract visibility well into 2027.
The Technical Verdict
Summary for $RIG
$RIG is no longer a falling knife; it is a mature Wyckoff Accumulation base where institutional buyers have thoroughly cleaned out the float.
In summary, this combination of dealer delta hedging and a 31% short squeeze could fuel a rapid move back toward the $7.00 Call Wall. From a technical perspective, yesterday’s price action has taken $RIG below the 200 MA on the daily chart. However, the weekly candle has triggered our Quantum volatility indicator, closing just above the 200 MA, which is encouraging.
