Out on the water at Marina di Scarlino today—Act 5 of the RS21 Cup is underway.
The RS21 is a modern one-design keelboat (about 6.7m) built for close, skill-first racing. Every boat is identical — same hull, same sails, same gear — so results come down to starts, tactics, mark roundings, trimming and teamwork rather than who has the fastest kit. Crews of three or more sail short, intense windward-leeward races; the fleet is typically tight, with places changing at every rounding. Two categories race together: Open (professionals allowed) and Corinthian (amateurs).
This weekend is the season finale. The RS21 Cup is Italy’s national circuit for the class — five “Acts” across the country this year. Scarlino (24–27 September, Yacht Club Toscana) is Act 5 and also the Italian Championships, plus a round of the European EuroCup. Eleven races are scheduled over four days; today was the opening day of proper racing after a practice race. Twenty-four boats are on the water. Going into the event, Viva (Alessandro Molla) led the Open series, and Magique et Terrible (Malika Bellomi) led Corinthian — both titles, plus the Cup itself, are still live.
